Can Dogs Eat Sprinkles?

Are you in the kitchen baking and wondering if you can give your dog a few sprinkles as a treat? Are you baking a treat for your dog and want to put a few sprinkles on top but are asking yourself the question, "can dogs have sprinkles?".

The good news is that sprinkles are safe for dogs if used sparingly and rarely. There are also options for dog friendly sprinkles that your dog will love.

If given as a treat to your dog too often, your dog can become sick.

Regular sprinkles, such as those we use on our own cakes, are not suitable for dogs. They contain excessive amounts of sugar that could make your dog sick.

Regular Sprinkle Ingredients & Dogs

Certain ingredients in sprinkles may be bad for your dog. In little doses, sugar is not harmful to your dog, but it can create stomach problems.

Obesity and diabetes can be caused by consuming too much sugar. Too much corn syrup can also create the same issues. Dog friendly sprinkles do not contain the sugar found in regular sprinkles.

It should be noted that any sprinkles that contain chocolate should never be given to your dog. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Chocolate contains  chemicals that dogs cannot metabolize in the same way that humans can. If taken in significant quantities, chocolate is hazardous to dogs.

Chocolate has diuretic and cardiac stimulating properties and  your pet may become agitated and pee a lot. Chocolate can also cause nausea and diarrhea. If your dog consumes any chocolate or chocolate containing sprinkles and exhibits these signs, call your veterinary professional immediately.

What Should I Do If My Dog Eats Sprinkles?

The worst that may happen is that your dog develops an upset stomach, vomits, and potentially has diarrhea. It's rare that they'll become sick from sprinkles unless they eat a lot of them.

If your dog managed to get ahold of a larger amount of sprinkles, it's best to just keep an eye on them and see how they react. If they appear to be experiencing a negative response, contact your veterinarian right away.

However, more than likely, all you'll need to do is make sure they're not displaying any signs of illness. If several hours have gone and you haven't noticed any signs of diarrhea, vomiting, or any other unusual behavior, you're dog should be fine.
